Andrew and Nicola Forrest-owned Akubra will open its first retail store, with the promise of more to come back all year long, together with in WA.
Akubra stated the new store — at 162 Edward Street in Brisbane — was half of a broader strategy for the 149-year-old model which was purchased by the billionaires’ non-public investment vehicle Tattarang in November 2023.
Manufactured in Kempsey on the NSW North Coast, Akubra hats are offered online and via stockists and the Tattarang-owned boots model RM Williams.
Akubra chief govt Natalie Culina stated there was an alternative to broaden the iconic headwear’s retail presence “in a way that brings the true essence of Akubra to life”.
“This marks our first-ever branded store experience, and choosing Queensland for our debut was a natural decision — it’s where our community is strongest,” Ms Culina stated, including it was excited to deliver the model expertise to WA.
“This isn’t just a store — it’s an immersive celebration of Australian heritage, craftsmanship, and the iconic handcrafted hats that have become woven into our national identity.”
The store will open on Friday afternoon and guarantees a “fit-out combining Akubra’s craftsmanship and heritage with traditional hand-crafted details and a contemporary edge”.
Mr Forrest stated he was “incredibly proud” to open the new store, emphasising the significance of investing in Australian legacy manufacturers to drive growth, create native jobs and bolster the nation’s manufacturing industry.
“Akubra has been ingrained in the fabric of Australian families for generations, and I’m proud that more people will have the opportunity to experience this great Australian-made product,” he stated.
Ms Forrest stated Akubra’s legacy was a testomony to the standard, heritage and the “enduring spirit” of Australian craftsmanship.
“Expanding Akubra’s presence across Australia is not just about growing the brand — it’s about investing in the future of Australian craftsmanship,” she stated.
“We’re helping to ensure the next generation of artisans have the support they need to thrive in regional communities, preserving the craftsmanship that makes Akubra and Australia’s manufacturing sector so special.”
Akubra was based in Hobart in 1876 by Benjamin Dunkerley. British hatmaker Stephen Keir joined the company in 1904.
The handmade hats have been produced for Australian Olympic groups, the Australian Armed Forces and featured in basic movies.
Each hat takes about six weeks and 162 steps to make, passing via 60 pairs of fingers in that time.
