Qantas chair John Mullen has conceded the airline’s popularity is a “long way from being fixed” simply days after it introduced the departure of promoting guru Todd Sampson from the board.
But Mr Mullen reckons it has the precise methods in place to restore the Flying Kangaroo’s image, which was left battered after 16 years beneath former chief government Alan Joyce.
“We’re a long way from fixing it but now we have all the ingredients. We have a humble leader (in Vanessa Hudson), a CEO who leads from the front, no ego, very much a team leader who walks the talk,” he advised the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors convention in Melbourne on Wednesday, in response to The Australian.
“On Christmas Day, I was home enjoying a beer, she was walking the terminals, talking to staff. I really sense that people think there is a change and we’re heading the right way.”
Mr Mullen’s feedback come after Qantas introduced on Monday that long-serving director Mr Sampson would get replaced on the board by tech government Dion Weisler.
Speaking on a panel, Mr Mullen advised Wednesday’s convention he valued variety within the boardroom, saying: “If everyone thinks and speaks as I do, what’s the use of that?”
“You want people around the board table who come from a different world, who see things from a different lens,” he mentioned, including he didn’t perceive how “diversity couldn’t be see as a good thing”.
Mr Weisler is at present a non-executive director at BHP, biotech Thermo Fisher Scientific and tech firm Intel Corporation. He was the previous boss of data technology firm HP.
Asked what stored him awake at night time, Mr Mullen pointed to new enterprise bargaining agreements failing to incorporate productiveness advantages, saying it was a “real noose around our neck”.
“We’ve lost that debate altogether. I think back to the days of Paul Keating, Mick Kelty, there was a real agreement that you have to grow the pie, before you start dividing it,” he mentioned.
“Now many awards are made without any attempt to increase productivity.”
It comes after Qantas not too long ago struck a deal with short haul pilots agreed to identical job, identical pay provisions for flight attendants employed by way of labour rent firms.
