Qantas chair John Mullen has conceded the airline’s popularity is a “long way from being fixed” simply days after it introduced the departure of promoting guru Todd Sampson from the board.

But Mr Mullen reckons it has the precise methods in place to restore the Flying Kangaroo’s image, which was left battered after 16 years beneath former chief government Alan Joyce.

“We’re a long way from fixing it but now we have all the ingredients. We have a humble leader (in Vanessa Hudson), a CEO who leads from the front, no ego, very much a team leader who walks the talk,” he advised the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors convention in Melbourne on Wednesday, in response to The Australian.

“On Christmas Day, I was home enjoying a beer, she was walking the terminals, talking to staff. I really sense that people think there is a change and we’re heading the right way.”

Mr Mullen’s feedback come after Qantas introduced on Monday that long-serving director Mr Sampson would get replaced on the board by tech government Dion Weisler.
