PM unveils $2.4bn rescue package deal for embattled | Australian Markets
The federal and South Australian governments have united to fund a $2.4bn rescue package deal for the embattled Whyalla Steelworks.
The transfer might avoid wasting 3100 direct and oblique jobs that depend upon the important thing smelter, which produces 75 per cent of Australia’s structural metal.
Anthony Albanese unveiled the transfer with South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas in Whyalla on Thursday.

Each governments will stump up an initial $500m, with the Commonwealth additionally drawing one other $500m from its Inexperienced Iron Funding Fund in the long term.
The rescue package deal comes after the South Australian authorities pressured the steelworks into administration as a result of it was on the way in which to “compromising” the Australian metal industry.
It has been haemorrhaging money for months, fuelling doubt that proprietor GFG Alliance might meet its mounting debt obligations.
Mr Malinauskas mentioned the package deal was not a “bailout” for the steelworks’ proprietor, British metal magnate Sanjeev Gupta.
“There is no bailout here of GFG,” he mentioned.
“They will have to deal with the process of administration.
“What we’re going to do is support the businesses on the ground who have done nothing wrong and do not owe anything to anyone.”
Mr Gupta bought the plant in 2017 for $700m, promising to reinvest within the ageing works and remodel it into a “green steel” plant.
Mr Malinauskas has accused Mr Gupta of failing to invest within the plant.
