SEEK survey suggests majority of millennial, Gen X | Australian Markets
More than half of all millennial and Gen X staff remorse their profession decisions and would pursue a completely different path in life if they might have their time over again, recent analysis from a main employment company suggests.
ASX-listed SEEK surveyed 3033 working-age Australians to uncover the startling office revelation, with money issues listed as probably the most common cause for regret.
Some 54 per cent of millennials, 57 per cent of Gen X staff, 52 per cent of Baby Boomers and 40 per cent of Gen Z staff reported profession remorse.
From that cohort, 47 per cent flagged the phrase “I don’t earn enough” as the important thing cause for dissatisfaction, whereas 30 per cent listed “my interests and passions have changed”, 28 per cent listed “it’s unfulfilling” for 28 per cent and 26 per cent harassed “poor work and life balance”.
There are additionally a number of elements stopping staff from making a profession shift, the analysis suggests, with financial considerations and the sensation it’s “too late” to change careers being the highest causes holding staff in place.
The findings, launched within the company’s Evolving Working Life report, additionally show one in three staff imagine they’ll work properly into their 70s and even past.
“It is understandable that with many of us living and working longer than ever before, many Australians may be rethinking their current career,” SEEK head of market knowledge Leigh Broderick stated.
“What we found particularly interesting in the Evolving Working Life report was the mismatch between so many workers believing that they would be working into their 70s, yet many believing it was too late to make a change, even the younger generations.
“Having second thoughts about your career choice is a very common experience.”
Only 7 per cent of staff are actively shifting to a new profession, the report suggests.
Despite pervasive profession remorse, the analysis suggests practically half of all staff really feel optimistic about their future careers and their job security.
Over half of working Australians, or 56 per cent, believing their present position will exist in 10 years, the report states, and simply 10 per cent stated they felt involved their abilities and expertise can be made redundant with technology
developments.
Burn out, sluggish or zero wage growth and poor work and life stability are the highest considerations across the future of work for staff.
“We are more agile than we may give ourselves credit for, with half of Australian workers having already worked in at least three different industries,” Ms Broderick stated.
But a quarter of us nonetheless confess to feeling uncomfortable with making a change in our profession.
